Recover the object
After a transitive verb, 之 can stand for a person, thing, or previously stated situation. English number and gender come from context; the graph itself does not supply them.
之
A reading procedure
- Locate the governing verb.
- Read the preceding clauses for a plausible referent.
- Try the referent in place of 之, then check the whole argument.
Do not translate every 之 as “of”. The same written form also links modifiers and can mean “go”.

23 examples in context
學而時習之
To learn and revisit what one has learned at fitting times.
之 supplies the object of 習. The learning just mentioned supplies a plausible referent; it is not a possessive linker here. 時 can suggest appropriate or recurring times, so the English is a reading aid, not the only translation.
Check your reading · What does 之 do after 習?
It supplies the object: what has been learned.
未之有也
There has not yet been such a case.
之 precedes 有 in this negative environment. Its referent is the preceding description of someone who dislikes challenging superiors yet likes creating disorder. Recover that description before choosing an English pronoun.
Check your reading · Why is 之 before 有?
This is a negative construction with a preceding pronominal object.
雖曰未學,吾必謂之學矣
Even if such a person is said not to have studied, I would certainly call that person learned.
雖 concedes a description that the main judgment rejects. The preceding examples of conduct define the person referred to by 之. This contrast separates schooling from the speaker’s criterion for being learned.
Check your reading · What survives the concession introduced by 雖?
The speaker’s judgment that the person counts as learned.
一言以蔽之
Use one statement to encompass them.
之 refers to the poems just mentioned as 詩三百. English “them” comes from that referent, not from a plural ending on 之. 蔽 is interpreted here as summing up or encompassing.
Check your reading · Why can a single 之 be translated “them”?
Its number is recovered from the preceding reference to the poems.
道之以政,齊之以刑
Guide them through governmental measures and regulate them through punishments.
The two clauses align verb–object–basis. Their 之 refers to the people, who are named in the next clause. The parallel second half replaces 政 and 刑 with 德 and 禮, making the political contrast visible.
Check your reading · Which two positions stay constant in the parallel clauses?
The object 之 and the 以 phrase following it.
生,事之以禮;死,葬之以禮,祭之以禮
While they live, serve them with ritual; after death, bury and sacrifice to them with ritual.
The repeated 之 refers to the parents under discussion. 生 and 死 set contrasting circumstances, while 以禮 stays constant. The English plural is contextual, and the ritual standard explains the previous compressed answer.
Check your reading · What remains constant across the three actions?
The standard 以禮.
先行其言而後從之
First put the words into practice, then let the words follow the action.
The line reverses the expected relation between speaking and doing. Its compact pronoun reference permits discussion: the English spells out a conventional reading of words following conduct. Keep the supplied roles distinct from the written forms.
Check your reading · What practical order does the line emphasize?
Action before speech.
臨之以莊,則敬
Approach the people with dignity, and they will show respect.
之 is the object of 臨 and refers to 民 from the question. The subject of 敬 is then understood as the people. The subject therefore changes across the two clauses, even though no new pronoun is written.
Check your reading · Who is understood to perform 敬?
The people, rather than the person who approaches them.
申之以孝悌之義
Reinforce the instruction through the principles of filial and fraternal conduct.
The first 之 resumes the instruction under discussion; the second links 孝悌 to 義. The same graph performs two different jobs within one short phrase. The interpretation of the resumed object depends on the preceding 教.
Check your reading · Do the two instances of 之 perform the same function?
No. One is an object pronoun; the other links a modifier to 義.
金玉盈堂,莫之能守
Gold and jade fill the hall, but no one can keep them safe.
之 precedes 能守 under the negative subject 莫. Its referent is the accumulated wealth. This is another environment for a preceding pronominal object; it should be compared with 未之有 without claiming that all negatives behave identically.
Check your reading · What does 之 refer to?
The gold and jade just mentioned.
視之而弗見
Look at it, yet it is not seen.
之 supplies the object of 視, and 而 connects the attempt with its frustrated outcome. 弗 is retained exactly as the witness writes it. The parallel hearing and grasping clauses help establish the repeated relation.
Check your reading · What kind of relation does 而 connect here?
An attempted perception and its unsuccessful result.
吾不知其名,字之曰道
I do not know its name; I style it “Dao”.
其 relates 名 to the previously described entity. 之 is the object of 字, which functions as a naming verb. 曰 introduces the assigned designation. Keeping these roles separate shows why repeated small words carry much of the structure.
Check your reading · Which verb takes 之 as its object?
字, used as a verb of naming.
舉世而譽之而不加勸
Even if the whole world praised him, he would not be further encouraged.
The first clause makes the world the praising participant; the second concerns the person praised. The subject changes without being restated. The parallel clause about blame tests the same composure from the opposite side.
Check your reading · Who is understood as the subject of 不加勸?
The person praised, rather than the whole world.
庖人雖不治庖,尸祝不越樽俎而代之矣
Even if the cook fails to manage the kitchen, the ritual officer does not cross the vessels to replace him.
雖 grants the cook’s failure without granting a transfer of roles. 之 refers to the cook, while the subject of 代 is the ritual officer. The analogy answers the offer of rule in the surrounding dialogue.
Check your reading · Who would replace whom in 代之?
The ritual officer would replace the cook.
青、取之於藍而青於藍
Blue dye is taken from indigo, yet is bluer than indigo.
The first 於 introduces the source; the second gives a comparison standard. The repeated graph therefore does different work within one sentence. The craft example supports a claim about learning and transformation, not a botanical definition of 青.
Check your reading · Do the two instances of 於 express the same relation?
No: source in 取之於藍, comparison in 青於藍.
善生養人者人親之
People feel close to one who is good at sustaining and nourishing them.
The first 人 belongs inside 生養人; 者 then closes the description of the ruler. The next 人 is the subject of 親, and 之 refers back to that ruler. Without these boundaries, a reader can mistake the two adjacent 人 for one constituent.
Check your reading · Who is the object of 親?
The person described by 善生養人者, resumed by 之.
名無固宜,約之以命,約定俗成謂之宜
Names have no fixed inherent fitness; they are assigned by agreement, and established convention is called fitting.
The paragraph distinguishes a name's fit from the conventions that sustain it. Recover the referent of each 之 locally rather than assuming both name the same kind of thing. This argument does not imply that any private change of wording automatically becomes intelligible to a community.
Check your reading · What makes a naming practice count as fitting in this sentence?
Agreement that has become established convention.
凡說之難:在知所說之心,可以吾說當之
The difficulty of persuasion lies in knowing the mind of the person being persuaded, so that one's proposal can fit it.
所說 points to the person addressed, while 吾說 names the speaker's proposal. The repeated graph 說 therefore has related but different roles. The final 之 refers to the target mind or its concerns; audience analysis is the issue, not merely fluency in speaking.
Check your reading · What is the contrast between 所說 and 吾說?
The person being persuaded versus what the persuader says or proposes.
奇正相生,如循環之無端,孰能窮之?
The extraordinary and the regular generate one another, like a circle without an endpoint; who could exhaust them?
相 makes the generation reciprocal; the question expects no finite completion. 之 resumes the transformations just described. 奇 and 正 are contrasting tactical categories here, so modern everyday glosses such as strange and correct obscure the argument.
Check your reading · What does 相 add to 生?
Reciprocity: each mode gives rise to the other.
卒未親附而罰之,則不服,不服則難用也
If troops are punished before they feel attachment, they do not submit; without submission they are difficult to employ.
之 resumes 卒 as the object of punishment. Two 則 relations connect timing, response, and usability. The following clause also warns against failing to enforce punishment after attachment; isolating this sentence would hide that paired argument.
Check your reading · Which missing context changes how this advice should be summarized?
The next warning about attachment without effective enforcement.
視卒如嬰兒,故可與之赴深谿
Regard the troops as infants, and one can go with them into deep ravines.
之 refers to the troops and is governed by 與, not by 赴. The parental comparison is followed by a warning about affection without command. It is an argument about leadership and loyalty, not a claim that the soldiers literally lack adult capacities.
Check your reading · Which word governs the pronoun 之?
與: going with the troops.
擇其善者而從之,其不善者而改之
Choose what is good in them and follow it; take what is not good and correct it in oneself.
其 resumes the companions in the preceding sentence. The second half leaves the reflexive application unstated, which the paired instruction and self-cultivation context support. That supplied relation should be distinguished from a literal claim that one immediately reforms the other people.
Check your reading · What is supplied in the usual reading of 改之?
Correcting the corresponding fault in oneself rather than necessarily changing the companion.
天下莫柔弱於水,而攻堅強者莫之能勝
Nothing in the world is softer or weaker than water, yet in working against the hard and strong, nothing can surpass it.
於 introduces the comparison standard in the first clause. In 莫之能勝, 之 precedes the modal and verb in a negative environment and refers to water. The apparent weakness and effective action form the paradox; softness should not be reduced to simple inability to act.
Check your reading · What is the referent and position of 之?
Water, placed before 能勝 in the negative construction.
