Notice an object before its verb
In certain negative environments a pronominal object precedes the verb. Interrogative objects also occur before their governing verb or preposition. These patterns explain sequences that look reversed to a modern learner.

13 examples in context
未之有也
There has not yet been such a case.
之 precedes 有 in this negative environment. Its referent is the preceding description of someone who dislikes challenging superiors yet likes creating disorder. Recover that description before choosing an English pronoun.
Check your reading · Why is 之 before 有?
This is a negative construction with a preceding pronominal object.
其斯之謂與
Might this be what the words are speaking of?
斯 is placed before 謂 in an emphatic construction associated with 之. This is distinct from the negative-object pattern 未之有. The phrase asks whether the quoted imagery applies to the lesson just discussed.
Check your reading · Is this the same environment as 未之有?
No. It is an emphatic object construction, not a negative clause.
不患人之不己知
Do not worry that others do not recognize you.
人之不己知 forms the situation that is the object of 患. Inside it, 己 precedes 知 under negation. Two different structures operate together: an embedded clause with 之 and a preceding pronominal object.
Check your reading · Which word is the object of 知?
己, placed before 知 in the negative clause.
不敬,何以別乎
Without respect, by what could one distinguish the cases?
何 is the interrogative object associated with 以. The question challenges whether mere provision of food distinguishes filial care from feeding animals. Its intended answer is supplied by the contrast with 敬.
Check your reading · How should 何以 be bracketed?
As an interrogative object with 以: by what means or on what basis.
何以利吾國
By what means can I benefit my state?
何 precedes its governing 以. 吾 is spoken by the king within Mencius’s quoted scenario; it does not refer to Mencius. The following social ranks repeat the same frame with 家 and 身.
Check your reading · Who is the referent of 吾 in this quoted question?
The king in the scenario being quoted.
然而不王者,未之有也
There has not been someone who acts in this way and still fails to become a true king.
王 functions as a predicate. 者 packages the described person or case, and 未之有 denies its existence with a preceding object. The claim belongs to Mencius’s political argument; the interface does not certify it as a historical law.
Check your reading · Which expression denies the existence of the described case?
未之有也.
金玉盈堂,莫之能守
Gold and jade fill the hall, but no one can keep them safe.
之 precedes 能守 under the negative subject 莫. Its referent is the accumulated wealth. This is another environment for a preceding pronominal object; it should be compared with 未之有 without claiming that all negatives behave identically.
Check your reading · What does 之 refer to?
The gold and jade just mentioned.
吾何以知眾甫之狀哉?以此
By what do I know the condition of these beginnings? By this.
The question places 何 before 以; the reply retains 以 and substitutes 此. That direct correspondence makes the governing relation visible. The short reply leaves its demonstrative referent to the preceding exposition.
Check your reading · How does the answer mirror the question?
何以 asks for the basis; 以此 names that basis demonstratively.
奚以知其然也
By what can one know that it is so?
奚 is the interrogative object related to 以. 其然 refers to the preceding contrast between smaller and greater perspectives or lifetimes. The question opens a demand for evidence rather than supplying it.

The examples of organisms with different spans of experience.
人何以能群?曰:分。分何以能行?曰:義。
How can people form a community? Through distinctions. How can those distinctions operate? Through what is right.
In both questions 何 precedes 以: by what means or basis? The very short answers require the reader to supply the relation asked about. 分 concerns differentiated roles in the surrounding argument; translating it simply as division can hide the claim about cooperation.
Check your reading · Which relation do the one-word answers complete?
The means or basis introduced by 何以.
人何以知道?曰:心。心何以知?曰:虛壹而靜。
By what do people know the way? By the heart-mind. How does it know? By being receptive, unified, and still.
The repeated 何以 first asks for a faculty and then for its manner of operation. 而 joins qualities rather than narrating a sequence of actions. The following sentences complicate what emptiness and stillness mean; they should not be reduced to having no memories or no mental activity.
Check your reading · How does the second question deepen the first?
It moves from identifying the knowing faculty to asking how that faculty works.
無衣無褐,何以卒歲?
Without garments or coarse clothing, how can we get through the year?
何 is placed before 以 in a question about means. The repeated 無 names material lack, and the surrounding seasonal labor supplies the practical setting. 卒 is the predicate complete or get through here, not the noun soldier familiar from military texts.
Check your reading · What does the question ask the reader to supply?
The means by which the year could be endured without clothing.
天下莫柔弱於水,而攻堅強者莫之能勝
Nothing in the world is softer or weaker than water, yet in working against the hard and strong, nothing can surpass it.
於 introduces the comparison standard in the first clause. In 莫之能勝, 之 precedes the modal and verb in a negative environment and refers to water. The apparent weakness and effective action form the paradox; softness should not be reduced to simple inability to act.
Check your reading · What is the referent and position of 之?
Water, placed before 能勝 in the negative construction.
