Put a clause inside a larger sentence
Between a subject-like phrase and its predicate, 之 can help present their relationship as a constituent within a larger sentence. This is often discussed under nominalization or subordination; analyses differ.
之
A reading procedure
- Identify the two sides of 之.
- Look outside that unit for the main predicate or topic frame.
- Translate the embedded event or fact as a whole.
A mechanical “of” can hide the actual clause structure. Not every noun–之–verb string has the same analysis.

7 examples in context
不患人之不己知
Do not worry that others do not recognize you.
人之不己知 forms the situation that is the object of 患. Inside it, 己 precedes 知 under negation. Two different structures operate together: an embedded clause with 之 and a preceding pronominal object.
Check your reading · Which word is the object of 知?
己, placed before 知 in the negative clause.
寡人之於國也,盡心焉耳矣
As for my relation to the state, I have devoted my heart to it.
The king introduces 國 as the frame for his claim. 之於 creates a relational topic, while 焉 refers back to that concern. 寡人 is the ruler’s self-designation; the translation “I” removes that register distinction.
Check your reading · Which expression marks the speaker’s royal self-designation?
寡人.
天下皆知美之為美
Everyone under heaven recognizes beauty as beauty.
之 links 美 with the predication 為美 inside the object of 知. The following parallel on 善 helps expose this structure. How recognition relates to the emergence of opposites is a philosophical question beyond this syntactic note.
Check your reading · What larger verb takes the embedded expression as its object?
知.
鵬之徙於南冥也
When the Peng moves to the southern darkness.
鵬 and 徙 form a subject–predicate relation linked by 之. 於南冥 names the destination. The resulting clause establishes a frame for the following account of the journey; an isolated possessive “Peng’s” is incomplete.
Check your reading · What role does 於南冥 play inside the framed clause?
It specifies the destination of 徙.
凡說之難:在知所說之心,可以吾說當之
The difficulty of persuasion lies in knowing the mind of the person being persuaded, so that one's proposal can fit it.
所說 points to the person addressed, while 吾說 names the speaker's proposal. The repeated graph 說 therefore has related but different roles. The final 之 refers to the target mind or its concerns; audience analysis is the issue, not merely fluency in speaking.
Check your reading · What is the contrast between 所說 and 吾說?
The person being persuaded versus what the persuader says or proposes.
天生烝民,有物有則。民之秉彝,好是懿德。
Heaven brings forth the people; things have their patterns. The people's enduring disposition inclines toward this admirable virtue.
The relation between 秉彝 and the following 好 is central to interpretation; bracket the clause before replacing it with a modern noun phrase. 是 is demonstrative before 懿德, not a modern copula. The lines are part of a praise poem, so their claim should first be read within that rhetorical setting.
Check your reading · Why is 是 not best treated as modern is here?
It points to the admirable virtue that follows as the object of 好.
人性之善也,猶水之就下也
The goodness of human nature is like water's tendency to move downward.
The two 之 constructions package relations for comparison. 猶 makes the water image an analogy, whose next lines must be read before judging its force. It does not itself settle what 性 includes or resolve Xunzi's differently framed account of cultivation.
Check your reading · What does 猶 tell us about the relation between the two clauses?
One is offered as an analogy for the other, not as a literal identity.
