Separate the topic from the comment
A sentence may establish what it is about before supplying a comment. 者 or 也 can help mark a topic boundary, but topics can also be unmarked. The topic need not be the grammatical agent.
者…也
A reading procedure
- Ask what the sentence sets out to discuss.
- Locate the comment made about it.
- Check whether a pronoun or omitted participant inside the comment refers back to the topic.
Not every pause is a topic boundary, and punctuation is an editorial layer.

11 examples in context
夫子至於是邦也
When the Master arrives in a state such as this.
至 is related to its destination by 於. The following 也 helps frame the clause before the comment about hearing its government. 是 here identifies the state; it is not the modern copula “is”.
Check your reading · What is the complement of 至於?
是邦, the state reached.
禮之用,和為貴
In the practice of ritual, harmony is valued.
禮之用 is the topic: the use or practice of ritual. 之 links 禮 to 用. 為貴 evaluates 和 in that frame. The following qualification warns that pursuing harmony without ritual regulation is insufficient.
Check your reading · What is the head of 禮之用?
用, modified by 禮.
回也不愚
As for Hui, he is not foolish.
回 names the topic and 也 marks a pause before the judgment 不愚. Earlier silence had seemed like foolishness; the later observation revises that judgment. Here 也 is not an English verb “is”.
Check your reading · Does 也 itself supply the negative predicate?
No. The predicate is 不愚.
寡人之於國也,盡心焉耳矣
As for my relation to the state, I have devoted my heart to it.
The king introduces 國 as the frame for his claim. 之於 creates a relational topic, while 焉 refers back to that concern. 寡人 is the ruler’s self-designation; the translation “I” removes that register distinction.
Check your reading · Which expression marks the speaker’s royal self-designation?
寡人.
南冥者,天池也
As for the southern darkness, it is the pool of heaven.
者 marks the topic 南冥, and 天池 is the identifying comment closed by 也. This is a clear place to observe the frame before comparing other 者 uses, such as a predicate referring to a person.
Check your reading · Does 者 mean “person” here?
No. It marks the topic 南冥.
鵬之徙於南冥也
When the Peng moves to the southern darkness.
鵬 and 徙 form a subject–predicate relation linked by 之. 於南冥 names the destination. The resulting clause establishes a frame for the following account of the journey; an isolated possessive “Peng’s” is incomplete.
Check your reading · What role does 於南冥 play inside the framed clause?
It specifies the destination of 徙.
名者,實之賓也
Name is the guest of reality.
者 establishes 名 as the topic; 實之賓 gives the metaphorical identifying comment. 之 links 實 to 賓. The host–guest image is an interpretation of priority within the dialogue, not a literal ontology supplied by the grammar.
Check your reading · What is the head of 實之賓?
賓.
夫樂者、樂也,人情之所必不免也
Music is joy: it is something human feelings cannot altogether escape.
The repeated written 樂 connects music with enjoyment in an explanatory assertion. 者 marks the topic and 也 closes the identification; 所 introduces what people do not avoid. Modern reading labels can help distinguish the senses, but do not recover the exact ancient sounds of this wordplay.
Check your reading · Why should the two written instances of 樂 not receive an identical mechanical gloss?
One names music and the other its relation to enjoyment in the argument.
二柄者,刑德也。何謂刑德?曰:殺戮之謂刑,慶賞之謂德。
The two handles are punishment and reward. What do these mean? Killing is called punishment; celebratory rewards are called beneficence.
The text supplies its own local definition of 德 through 慶賞. That administrative sense must not be replaced automatically by the virtue sense common elsewhere. The 何謂 question and following definitions are part of the argument, not a modern dictionary entry applying to every occurrence.
Check your reading · What local wording determines the sense of 德?
The explanation 慶賞之謂德 identifies it with rewards here.
兵者,國之大事也
Military affairs are a matter of great consequence for the state.
者 marks the topic and the final 也 closes a nominal identification. 國之大事 assigns political weight to 兵; the following life-and-death contrasts explain why scrutiny is required. Reading 兵 only as an individual soldier would miss this framing.
Check your reading · What is being classified by the nominal predicate?
Military affairs as a consequential matter for the state.
詩者、志之所之也。在心為志,發言為詩。
Poetry is where intention goes: held in the heart it is intention; expressed in speech it is poetry.
This belongs to the received Great Preface, not to the verse of Guan ju. In 所之, 之 is read verbally as going or proceeding, unlike the linking 之 before 所. The formula offers an interpretation of poetry within a later framing text; it is not the anonymous song's own explanation of its composition.
Check your reading · Which textual layer contains this statement?
The received preface, not the poem's verse.
