Recover what the text leaves unstated
Subjects, objects, and other participants can be left unstated when the discourse supplies them. Reading requires explicit hypotheses about those missing relations, especially when a new speaker enters.
∅
A reading procedure
- Identify the governing predicate.
- List which participants are expressed.
- Recover only what the surrounding discourse supports, and keep alternatives when needed.
Do not add an English pronoun as though its identity were written in the Chinese.

23 examples in context
本立而道生
When the root is established, the way grows.
The two clauses use the root-and-growth image. 而 connects them; “when” makes their inferred relation explicit in English. The text is describing an ethical foundation, not asserting a botanical etymology for 道.
Check your reading · Does 而 alone mean “when”?
No. That relation is inferred from the two clauses and their context.
吾日三省吾身
Each day I repeatedly examine myself.
吾 is spoken by Zengzi, named before the quotation. 三 can be read numerically as three times or with a repeated-action force; the three following questions also invite comparison. “Repeatedly” leaves that interpretive issue visible.
Check your reading · Who does 吾 refer to in this quotation?
Zengzi, the speaker introduced by 曾子曰.
行有餘力,則以學文
If conduct leaves strength to spare, then use it to study cultural learning.
The first clause sets a condition; 則 opens the following step. An object for 以 is understood from the available strength. The English “it” is supplied by interpretation and is not a separate pronoun written here.
Check your reading · Which word introduces the consequent step?
則.
父在,觀其志;父沒,觀其行
While the father lives, observe the son’s intentions; after the father dies, observe his conduct.
The paired clauses guide the reading, but the son is supplied from the social situation rather than named in these words. 其 requires a referent. Keep this supplied referent visible when comparing interpretations of the passage.
Check your reading · Which participant is supplied rather than explicitly named here?
The son whose intentions and conduct are being assessed.
就有道而正焉
Approach those who have the way and set oneself right through them.
有道 is understood of people who embody the way. 焉 can point back to that relational setting. The exact complement supplied in English is interpretive; the phrase is not a source-attested modern word segmentation.
Check your reading · What earlier expression helps interpret 焉?
有道, the people or setting just approached.
子曰:「無違。」
The Master said, “Do not depart from it.”
This extremely compressed answer leaves the relevant standard unstated. The following exchange explains conduct through 禮. Read on before deciding what 無違 forbids; translating it immediately as obedience to a particular person can overcommit.
Check your reading · Why is the next passage necessary?
It supplies the ritual context for the omitted standard.
臨之以莊,則敬
Approach the people with dignity, and they will show respect.
之 is the object of 臨 and refers to 民 from the question. The subject of 敬 is then understood as the people. The subject therefore changes across the two clauses, even though no new pronoun is written.
Check your reading · Who is understood to perform 敬?
The people, rather than the person who approaches them.
請以戰喻
Allow me to illustrate this through warfare.
請 introduces the proposed explanation and 以戰 names its basis. The matter to be illustrated is omitted because the preceding puzzle supplies it. The line announces an analogy rather than identifying warfare as the literal topic of policy.
Check your reading · What is left unstated after 喻?
The issue being explained, supplied by the preceding exchange.
吾何以知眾甫之狀哉?以此
By what do I know the condition of these beginnings? By this.
The question places 何 before 以; the reply retains 以 and substitutes 此. That direct correspondence makes the governing relation visible. The short reply leaves its demonstrative referent to the preceding exposition.
Check your reading · How does the answer mirror the question?
何以 asks for the basis; 以此 names that basis demonstratively.
希言自然
Sparing speech is so of itself.
The compressed phrase leaves the relation between its terms open to interpretation. 自然 can be read as spontaneously so, rather than the modern categorical noun “nature”. Consult the rest of the chapter before fixing the relation in English.
Check your reading · Which modern gloss should not be inserted automatically for 自然?
The noun “nature”.
適百里者,宿舂糧
One traveling a hundred li prepares grain the night before.
者 closes the travel description 適百里. The following predicate concerns that traveler, although its subject is not repeated. The surrounding short and long journeys test how preparation depends on scale.
Check your reading · Who is the unexpressed subject of 宿舂糧?
The traveler identified by 適百里者.
有魚焉
There is a fish there.
焉 refers back to the remote sea just introduced. It supplies the location without repeating the place name. This local use can be compared with clause-final particle uses elsewhere rather than assigning one expansion to all 焉.
Check your reading · Which location does 焉 recover?
The remote sea in the preceding description.
然後圖南
Only then does it plan its southward journey.
然後 explicitly orders this step after the ascent described earlier. 南 supplies the direction within a compact predicate. The subject is the great bird carried over from the surrounding account.
Check your reading · Why is an explicit subject unnecessary here?
The preceding narrative already establishes the bird as the continuing participant.
舉世而譽之而不加勸
Even if the whole world praised him, he would not be further encouraged.
The first clause makes the world the praising participant; the second concerns the person praised. The subject changes without being restated. The parallel clause about blame tests the same composure from the opposite side.
Check your reading · Who is understood as the subject of 不加勸?
The person praised, rather than the whole world.
人何以能群?曰:分。分何以能行?曰:義。
How can people form a community? Through distinctions. How can those distinctions operate? Through what is right.
In both questions 何 precedes 以: by what means or basis? The very short answers require the reader to supply the relation asked about. 分 concerns differentiated roles in the surrounding argument; translating it simply as division can hide the claim about cooperation.
Check your reading · Which relation do the one-word answers complete?
The means or basis introduced by 何以.
不可勝在己,可勝在敵
Being impossible to defeat lies with oneself; the possibility of defeating the enemy lies with the enemy.
The parallel 可勝 expressions require careful recovery of who defeats whom. The surrounding sentences distinguish preparing one's own security from controlling an opponent's vulnerability. English must make those implicit participants explicit without treating the two clauses as identical in voice.
Check your reading · Which side of the situation is presented as within one's own control?
Making oneself resistant to defeat.
窈窕淑女,君子好逑
The graceful, good woman is a fine match for the gentleman.
逑 supplies the idea of a mate or match. The compact verse leaves the relation between the two noun phrases to be construed, so a modern copula in English is supplied. Do not treat the preface's political interpretation as if it were another line of this stanza.
Check your reading · Is an explicit word corresponding to English is written in this phrase?
No; it is supplied to express the inferred relation between the noun phrases.
一日不見,如三月兮
One day without seeing that person feels like three months.
The object of 見 is left implicit and supplied from the song's situation. 如 compares experienced duration rather than making a calendar calculation. 兮 contributes to the verse's cadence; translating it as a separate content word is usually unhelpful here.
Check your reading · What kind of comparison is made?
The felt duration of absence, not a factual equality of time spans.
所謂伊人,在水一方
The one I speak of is on one side of the water.
所謂 presents the person referred to in the song, while 在 introduces location. English I is an interpretive supply, not an explicit pronoun in this line. 伊 should not be turned into a fixed modern gender label without evidence from the song.
Check your reading · Which information in the English rendering is not explicitly written as a pronoun?
The speaker I; the verse leaves the subject of speaking implicit.
哀哀父母!生我劬勞。
Oh, my parents! In bringing me into life, how they labored.
我 is the object of 生, while the parents remain the understood subject. The exclamation directs attention to their hardship; it does not by itself specify every circumstance behind the speaker's grief. The preceding plant comparison should be retained when reading the full stanza.
Check your reading · Who performs 生 and who is its object?
The parents are the understood subject; 我, the speaker, is the object.
舉一隅不以三隅反,則不復也
If shown one corner someone does not return with the other three, I do not repeat the lesson.
The corners form an image of the learner completing an inference. Subjects and objects are omitted, so the teacher and learner must be recovered from the preceding account of prompting. The passage does not identify a literal geometry lesson as its only setting.
Check your reading · What must the learner contribute beyond the teacher's prompt?
An inference extending the one corner to the other three.
富貴不能淫,貧賤不能移,威武不能屈
Wealth and rank cannot corrupt such a person; poverty and low status cannot shift them; force cannot bend them.
The affected person is left unstated in each clause and identified by the surrounding description of 大丈夫. Parallel predicates test constancy under different pressures. The sentence describes an ethical ideal rather than asserting that material circumstances never affect actual people.
Check your reading · What omitted participant is shared by all three clauses?
The steadfast person being characterized in the passage.
用志不分,乃凝於神
When attention is not divided, it becomes concentrated to a remarkable degree.
乃 presents the result of focused attention. The preceding story of catching cicadas supplies the practice behind the maxim. 神 is interpretively rendered here; the statement should not be turned into a verified neurological mechanism or a claim of supernatural power.
Check your reading · What concrete activity gives the sentence its setting?
The practiced skill of catching cicadas described in the preceding story.
