Read a witness, not an imaginary perfect text
Keep exact wording and punctuation visible while distinguishing a source transcription, a variant, and an editorial correction.
A passage belongs to a particular witness
This collection preserves the selected digital sources, including 恒 in the opening Laozi passage and 安有 in chapter eighteen. These observations establish the wording of the imported witness. They do not establish that every ancient copy had those forms, or that the digital source reproduces an original autograph.
Different kinds of difference need different labels
A change in graph, a different word, a missing phrase, and a different sentence boundary are not the same phenomenon. Compare 無 and 无 in the displayed passages as visible forms, but do not infer an entire theory of textual transmission from that pair. Record the actual difference before deciding what caused it.
Punctuation is part of a reading
The imported punctuation guides segmentation and is retained as source data. Removing it for practice changes the display, not the underlying witness. A reader proposing another division should state which words group together and why; silently changing the source to match a preferred translation obscures the interpretive choice.
Use manuscript scholarship without overclaiming
Excavated and received Laozi witnesses differ in wording and arrangement; their relationships remain matters of scholarship. That history explains why exact edition records matter. It does not let this portal identify its selected digital text with a particular excavated manuscript without evidence for that identification.
A normalized search match is not a licence to rewrite a quotation. Preserve the source form in quotations and show any proposed correction separately.
If a familiar edition has different wording from the portal, what should you compare first?
The named editions and the exact surrounding text, then the kind of difference. A mismatch alone does not show which witness is earlier or which reading is preferable.
