Turn actions into things to discuss
See how 者 and 所 let a passage identify people, actions, objects, means, or topics without treating every case as “someone who”.
Bracket the full expression
In 知之者, do not detach 者 from 知之. The expression identifies those who know it, and the next expressions compare them with those who delight in or enjoy it. The repeated pattern makes the levels of comparison visible without adding a new named person each time.
Recover the open role
所欲 points toward what is desired rather than simply the person desiring. In 以若所為求若所欲, the contrast is between what the ruler does and what the ruler wants. Recover both roles before interpreting the image of climbing a tree to seek fish in the surrounding argument.
Do not make “agent” the only category
善行者 can be read as a person adept at going or acting, but the following parallel expressions each need their own context. The particle does not supply a fixed occupational label. Likewise, 者 can introduce a topic for explanation; a short translation must not erase the construction that supports that explanation.
Read compound patterns as compounds
In 荃者所以在魚, 者 introduces the fish trap as a topic and 所以 contributes an account of its use. The passage repeats the structure for a snare and for words. This is more informative than assigning “person” to every 者 or the modern connective “therefore” to every 所以.
The convenient labels “agent nominalizer” and “patient nominalizer” describe important patterns, but they are not interchangeable English translations or exhaustive rules for every occurrence.
In 以若所為求若所欲, which expression names the desired result?
若所欲: what you desire. 若所為 identifies what you do, the means being challenged by the speaker.
