Who acts, who changes, and who is implied?
Track participants and the scope of negation before deciding whether a passage describes ability, action, influence, or responsibility.
Assign the roles explicitly
In 使民以時, the people are the object of employment, and timing qualifies that employment. A reader must recover the governing actor from the setting. Drawing this small role map prevents a translation from making the people the subject of an action that the phrase assigns elsewhere.
Distinguish unwillingness from inability
The Mengzi passage sets 不為 against 不能. Both contain negation, yet they negate different things: acting and being able. The distinction matters to the argument about the king. Whether its diagnosis is persuasive is a further question; grammatical clarity does not require accepting the speaker’s conclusion.
Track a change of subject
我無為而民自化 places 我 and 民 in separate clauses. 自 marks the people’s transformation in the description, while the ruler presents restraint as relevant to it. The sentence therefore requires two roles and a proposed relationship between them; it is not simply a slogan that nobody acts.
Keep skill and agency together
Cook Ding describes meeting the task with 神 rather than relying on visual inspection in the same way as before. The narrative still depicts preparation, movement, and attention. Avoid turning an account of developed skill into the claim that an expert has no agency or never attends to difficulty.
Negating one kind of intervention is not the same as denying every action, institution, or form of care.
What changes grammatically between 我無為 and 民自化?
The subject changes from 我 to 民. The second clause describes the people’s transformation; the relation to the first clause must be interpreted in context.
