What an analogy proves—and what it leaves open
Map an analogy’s relevant relation, then test where the comparison stops working.
Name the compared relation
In the fifty-steps and hundred-steps exchange, the comparison targets people who fled to different distances. The important relation is not their measured speed or fitness. Before transferring the image to government, identify what the ruler agrees about the two runners and how the next reply uses that agreement.
The same image can support different questions
Water appears in accounts of human tendencies and in praise of a way of acting. In the Mengzi comparison with flowing downward, direction matters. In 上善若水, benefiting others, not competing, and occupying disliked places enter the description. “Both use water” is a starting connection, not a finished interpretation.
Look for pressure on the example
After the Mengzi describes water’s downward tendency, the discussion considers water being forced elsewhere. A strong reading includes this nearby complication. Otherwise an image used within an argument becomes a slogan detached from the very objection the passage anticipates.
Distinguish illustration from demonstration
The trap-and-fish comparison makes a relation between means and ends easy to grasp. Whether words can be discarded in the same way as a trap requires further consideration. Ask which features transfer and which do not: a useful analogy can guide thought without proving that its two domains are identical.
A striking shared image may conceal different aims, different objections, and different relations between the compared things.
What should be compared first when two passages both mention water?
The feature selected in each passage—such as downward movement, benefit, or lack of contention—and the conclusion each speaker tries to draw from it.
