Taiwanese Hokkien 臺灣台語Reference sources only
The Ministry of Education dictionary is the reference for Taiwanese vocabulary and readings. Its Tâi-lô guide distinguishes citation tones from changes in connected speech. Other Hokkien varieties require their own sources.

Etymology & evidence
2 accountsAn older spelling in the dictionaries
CUHK quotes the Shuowen entry for 夝, analyzed there as 夕 with phonetic 生, and a Jiyun notice linking the spelling 晴. Taiwan’s variant dictionary states that 晴 itself is not an entry in the Shuowen. Keep the quoted older character distinct from the current graph.
What is still missing
The consulted entry supplies too little evidence to date every step between these spellings. The atlas therefore shows a concise dictionary relationship and leaves the specimen sequence open.
Reading this character · explanatory note
晴 is about the weather clearing or being fine. It appears in 晴天, a sunny day, 晴空, a clear sky, and 放晴, to clear up. The modern form combines 日 with 青, making a useful visual contrast with 情 and 清. It does not simply mean “bright” in every context: 明亮 is the ordinary word for brightness more generally. The historical spelling evidence also deserves care. CUHK connects 晴 with the older spelling 夝 through traditional dictionaries. That is a documented spelling relationship, not permission to invent an uninterrupted series of ancient specimens.
Historical specimens remain at their sources. No dated attestation sequence or licensed specimen image is claimed.
Inspect CUHK’s forms and discussion ↗Forms & distinctions
晴 is used in both simplified and traditional Chinese. It should not be substituted for 清 when describing clear water, or for 情 when describing feelings. A shared reading or a shared 青 component does not make the characters equivalent.
情 has 忄 on the left and concerns feelings or circumstances. 晴 has 日 and concerns fine weather.
睛 has 目, with two inner horizontal strokes, and occurs in words for eyes. 日 in 晴 has one inner horizontal stroke.
